The Asian Canadian Special Events Association has partnered with Harbourfront Centre to bring LunarFest to Toronto from Jan. 20 to 24.

Toronto’s Harbourfront Centre will be home to LunarFest, celebrating Asian arts and culture.

LunarFest began in Vancouver in 2009 as part of the Winter Olympics, and is premiering in Toronto.

“This year the theme is the 'Treasures of the Sea' and there is the lantern aquarium. After they finish the festival here they will tear it all down and build it all up again in Vancouver,” said Jon Campbell, publicist for The Harbourfront Centre.

Campbell said that there has been a good response from the Asian communities, but that there is also an interest from other communities.

“I think the Lunar New Year is something that people are intrigued by, it’s one of those things that bridges (the cultures of East and West),” said Campbell.

Metro Square, an Asian shopping centre in Markham, is one of the many program partners for this event.

Judy Chu, promotions and events coordinator for Metro Square said, “It’s the first time in Toronto and we are glad to be the program partner for them.”

Activities that visitors can participate in include Lunar Skate, Lunar Café, Lunar Kids Game Station and the CIBC Pavilion.

CIBC is the title sponsor for LunarFest 2012 in both Toronto and Vancouver.

Teresa Tazumi, Director of Cultural Business and Development for the bank said, “[By] participating in this event we are proud to recognize the cultural contributions of Canada’s large and growing Asian community honouring the Lunar New Year tradition, and welcoming the year of the dragon.”
