by Jon Friedman Time put two-time Oscar-winning actor Tom Hanks on the cover of its current issue. The accompanying blurb proclaimed that Hanks, cast as the "History Maker," is "redefining America's past" with such ambitious historical vehicles as "Band of Brothers" and, now, "The Pacific." Read Time's profile of Hanks. While the magazine's assertion smacks of puffery -- designed to support what I'd call a flimsy conclusion -- hype is the least of Time's sins in this matter. While Hanks, a serious producer as well as an acclaimed actor, is busy redefining our nation's past, Time is unwittingly (I hope) helping to redefine the futures of its corporate cousin, HBO, and, to a degree, parent Time Warner. |
